BIOGRAPHY
Sevgi Urum was born in Ankara on 19th.November 1953.
She graduated from the Graphic Art Branch, Drawing and Painting Department of Gazi University, in Ankara 1974. .She completed her licence degree at Anadolu University in Eskisehir, in 1994.
She worked in The Ministry of National Education,as a graphic and painting artist,as an art teacher in the high schools for 22 years.Within this period she worked at the Educational Center for Film-Radio and Television in Ankara,as a graphic artist(1976-1981).She worked as an artist and teacher of educational technology at the Center of Educational Materials in İzmir (1981-1985).She worked as an art teacher in High Schools and Ege University.(1985-1996)
While she worked officially she continued to do artworks and art activities.She joined many solo and group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad since 1974.
Her works are in many public and private collections in Turkey and many countries of the world.
Her writings on arts are published in art magazines and papers.
Sevgi Urum lives in Istanbul,Turkey.She continues artworks at her art studio in Taksim Firini Sokak,8/3/Beyoglu/Istanbul/Turkey
She is the member of I.A.A.Unesco (InternationalPlastique ArtsAssociation) and Association of Fine arts(GSB) ,She is the member of many international and national art web-sites some of them below:

"Ephesus Paintings” are the symbolic and visual resultants of the light and the magic which will be reflected to our contemporary life,coming out from the ancient periods.
Many artists,were attracted with the various dimensions of this universe.
From the lines of my view this is a starting point just like a passion that I can not give up in my paintings. This visuality comes up on different positions on my canvases;sliping off reasons-results,leaving behind rules,forms and limits,mixing with life and it draws a path for itself.

I have entered into the world of music with my colors in the year 1998.The designs, which I have drawn during the symphony concerts, have been transformed into the colors on my canvasses, where the dimensions of music have been unified with the sensations of colors with my artistic feelings. In the creation process of “Colors of Music”, the musicians take the central position in my compositions.
Art wil be composed in the brain and accompanied by the body, for which the artist is most important...
My aim is to visualize whatever and however I have been impressed by the music and the musicians, to feel and to make people feel the greatness and infinity of both;music and painting.

These are neither the lights of Rembrandt nor the lights of Dali. Are these the lights of Sevgi Urum...?
Virtual spaces arising from small holes into the infinity...
Sevgi Ürüm calls the viewers to observe their own universe of the figures in her paintings.
She is not satisfied with the less,she wants much more.The points and tones of her colors are worth to praise.
So that Sevgi Urum will let mention more about her art in the future...

“Sevgi Urum is a real artworker! In her last exhibition she turns her cameras on to the universe of musicians, who play violin, cello, guitar etc. being the subjects of her paintings. Ürüm works figurative, but not photo-realistic. She gives a different taste with her abstractions, with richness of colors and her deformations to her stile.There is almost a tulle curtain in front of her paintings.This impression takes you to the world of dreams full of appelings. Peace and polifony come at first in her paintings.
She meanwhile says:”Art has to have harmony with the poliphony of our century”.

On “LIVING NATURMORTS”
“I work with the effects of the native themes under the dominance of the concepts of yesterday, today, tomorrow and infinity.The vase, the table ,the chair, the flower, the cover on them as “nature morte” objects will be applied for announcing the term of liveliness. Each object takes the color which ever it wants to be. Each part of the art painting becomes the desired painture.The contradictions on the surface,going around, wandering and transforming, the changes of rhythm, colors and symbols please me.”

On “ RELATIONS”
“The events, the people, their relations,the happenings in the society I observe, unit in artistic elements on my canvas. Each painting has not got a separated theme but each of them participates in a main streamline; people and their story,their symphony and their theatral appearance on the painting plane. The figures with their symbolic roles, reflect an attitude, a sense or a relation. I prefer a way of painting without repeatings and actual fashionable forms, but with an intensive artistic anxiety. This is not a coincidental search.”

Question 3: There were “ Girls coming from the harvest”,””Picking hazelnuts up”.”women, who carries woods” in your first exhibition in 1986. What kind of differences were in your paintings since that exhibition?
Answer 3: I spent my childhood at the Black Sea Region, where there is my home town.
I was so influenced by the diligence and productivity of village women workers. I wished to work figurative on my first paintings. So that these subjects were suitable for me.I leave the process of my paintings in a spontaneous development.Finally,I turned towards the semi abstract working stile by figure and color .
Question 4: You live in İzmir since 1981.You say that we can not think the person out of his social environment and the artists are always under the influence of it. In that case; what are the influences of Aegean Region on your art?
Answer 4: I went away from locality on my works. Started working about human relations and problems.I take thuman who are in a changing pocess by the highest technology and different relations , communications. I mean , there is “love” and “sensibility” in the human soul in fact.
Question 6: Have You been influenced on your artworks by some art streams or artists?Might we make interested your paintings as stile and form , into any art group?
Answer6: An artist has to know the development process of his or her own art .It is normal for an artist to be influenced. But the art has to go a specific sutructure, finally. I have an approaching as an expressionist although I don’t see myself connected with an art stile or group .It is better to leave the art in to the process of change.
